Valentines Day - A Singles Solution to Loneliness

2 comments - Post a comment

February 14...a single persons' worst nightmare. Here it is again. This year, let's try something different. Instead of sitting at home, feeling depressed, and watching old romantic movies, let's make something of the day. Let's love ourselves and be our own Valentine. There are many ways of pampering ourselves out of our depressed state. Here are a couple of tricks to keep our minds off of couples.

First, do something for yourself that you normally do not do. Get a facial, a manicure, a pedicure, or a massage. Treat yourself for the woman you are. You deserve some comfort. The second thing to do for yourself is buy something that makes you feel pretty. You can buy a shirt that that brings out the color of your eyes, some pants that hug you in all the right places, or my favorite, some sexy underwear that only you know that you are wearing.....

This can make you feel like a million dollars. The last thing to do on your Valentines Day is be around others that love you. Being around friends and family and truly enjoying their company will keep your mind off of other things you are missing.

So on this day where singles are usually looked over, treat yourself to feel your best. Love yourself and keep friends or family around so that you can have people you love to share the day with. Valentines Day is about love, but it doesn't have to be such a downer. Treat yourself right and you will feel great!

V is for Valentine

Celebration of Valentine's Day dates back to the 1400's. I thought it would be both entertaining and interesting to take a look at how this holiday is celebrated throughout various parts of the world during different eras, and reveal some of its myths.

Cupid, God of Love and son of Venus, fell for a mortal maiden named Psyche. Cupid married her even though, Venus was jealous of her beauty, and had ordered him to punish her. Since Psyche was mortal, she was forbidden to look at Cupid, but her sister convinced her to look at him. Cupid was angered and abandoned her, taking their castle and surroundings with him. She stood alone in an open field. Psyche became desperate to find Cupid so she entered into the temple of Venus where she was given a series of difficult tasks. During her last task, she was given a box and warned not to open it. Venus sent her to the underworld to get beauty of Proserpine and place it into the box. The temptation was too strong for Psyche to not open the box, and when she did she feel into a deadly slumber. Cupid found her and put the sleep from her body into the box. The gods were touched by the love Psyche carried for Cupid, so they made her a goddess.

In Japan, on February 14th women buy chocolates for men. However, it isn't until March 14th, White Day, that the men return the favor by gifting chocolates to the women. It's a definite reversal for the American culture. In American culture, men are expected to purchase gifts for women, regardless of whether a woman buys something for their mate or not....

Many years ago, children in England would dress themselves up as adults. They would travel from door to door singing the following song to the person who answered.

Good morning to you, Valentine;
Curl your locks as I do mine---
Two before and three behind.
Good morning to you, Valentine.

The expression 'you wear your heart on your sleeve' derives from the 1800's. Both American and British men pinned pieces of paper with the names of their sweethearts written on it. They wore it for several days which let everyone know who held the key to their heart.

One old myth describes how young girls were supposed to eventually marry the first eligible man she met on this day. If a girl was curious and brave enough, she could conjure up the appearance of her future spouse by going to the graveyard on St. Valentine's Eve at midnight. She would then sing a prescribed chant and run around the church twelve times.

Whatever the case may be, one thing is certain, every culture relates Valentine's Day to romance and love. Next time Valentine's Day rolls around, it might be endearing to try celebrating the holiday inspired by a different culture.

A Valentine’s Day Wedding: Finding Valentine Decorations

No Comment - Post a comment

Valentine’s Day is one of the most romantic days to get married, but when it comes to the reception, it can sometimes be difficult to find Valentine decorations. It isn’t so much that there are none available, but rather, the selection of decorations that are appropriate for a wedding are sparse due to the popularity of the date.

As with any kind of celebration, the easiest way to avoid being disappointed is to plan ahead of time. With Valentine’s Day being such a popular day for weddings, it is not something that you want to decide on the spur of the moment, or even two or three months beforehand. Some people plan their Valentine’s Day wedding a year or more in advance and still have trouble finding everything that they want, including the location.

One thing that may not be a problem is the paper bells in white; these are always plentiful in wedding supply stores. It may be more difficult to find them in the red of Valentine’s Day. In fact, the traditional Valentine’s Day colors are usually quite easy to find, but with so many weddings being scheduled on that day, it becomes more difficult. It may take a little searching, but streamers should be pretty easy to find since both red and white are popular colors during all times of the year. Again, this will depend because of the popularity of the day for both weddings and dances....

One place one can usually always find decorations in abundance for every occasion is on the Internet. With the number of online party and wedding supply stores, it’s quite likely that you can find everything you need. Do keep in mind, however, that you will still need advance planning. A Valentine’s Day wedding is not something you can decide quickly and expect to find everything you need for a reception. However, with advance planning, your Valentine’s Day wedding can be both beautiful and memorable.

Inexpensive Valentine Gift Ideas

3 comments - Post a comment

Over the past few decades, Valentine’s Day has gone from a fun little romantic holiday into a fully commercialized day that’s all about buying expensive flowers and even jewelry. Gone are the days where this day was about showing how much you cared about one another, or is it? With a little creativity, you can come up with some very unique and inexpensive valentine gift ideas.

Make Your Own Cards

Buying a pretty Valentine’s Day Card has gotten expensive. Make your own card by digging through the craft box. All you need is a sheet of cardstock or even construction paper and a few decorations. Write a personal message on and inside the card. Dig through some old pictures and find one of the two of you. Cut out a heart shape from red or pink construction paper and cute a whole inside, just big enough to fit the picture. Glue the picture on the card, then glue the heart on top of it. Use other heart shapes, stickers, markers, glitter and any other crafting supplies you have lying around to finish the card....

Homemade Treats

You’re also not stuck with having to buy expensive boxed chocolates. Surprise your sweetheart this year with some homemade treats instead. Dip some large strawberries in melted dark chocolate and allow them to dry on some wax paper. Sprinkle some chopped nuts or coconut flakes on the chocolate before it dries. Or allow it to harden and then melt some white chocolate. Pour the melted white chocolate into a Ziploc bag. Make small hole in the corner of the bag and use it to drizzle white chocolate over your chocolate covered strawberries. You can also make a batch of heart shaped sugar cookies, chocolate chip or peanut butter cookies decorated with a chocolate kiss, or even your favorite brownie recipe.

The Gift Of Your Time

One of the most precious gifts we can give these days is our time. With our many obligations, we often don’t spend as much time as we’d like to with loved ones. Take an afternoon or even a whole day off and spend it together. Go to a movie, grab some lunch, take a walk together or do anything else the two of you enjoy. Cook dinner together and then snuggle up on the couch to watch a good movie. It doesn’t really matter what you do as long as you make an effort to spend this special time together.

Menu Mailer – Make Dinner Easier

Here’s another great gift idea that won’t break the bank. Best of all, the recipient will be able to enjoy it all year long. Get a subscription to a weekly menu mailer. Wouldn’t it be nice to get a list of dinner ideas along with the recipes and a pre-made grocery list? With all the planning already done for him or her, the two of you will have more time to enjoy each other’s company each night.

A Clever Valentine's Day Gift

No Comment - Post a comment

You know the routine; picking out that special card with just the right verses, and then that special gift - an upscale box of candy, some flowers, maybe a nice ring, a new car, or some tickets for a cruise.

According to Wikipedia, The historical background of Valentine's day seems to go back to Christian martyrs named "Valentine" who died while standing up for their religious beliefs. "The first recorded association of Valentine's Day with romantic love is in (a poem) Parlement of Foules (1382) by Geoffrey Chaucer:

For this was on seynt Volantynys day
Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese [choose] his make [mate].

This poem was written to honor the first anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia. A treaty providing for a marriage was signed on May 2, 1381. (When they were married eight months later, he was 13 or 14. She was 14.)"

So how did Valentine's day go from martyrism to romantic love? That I'm not sure of, but now Valentine's day is all about our feelings toward that special person. However, I can't help think about the martyrs, and how their sacrifices helped to build a strong foundation for the Christian religion. And I can't help think about what gift would last beyond a ring, a car, or a cruise, and therefore have more meaning.....

Janet and I drove through Arcadia, Florida recently. Arcadia is home to many illegal immigrants, living in dilapidated trailers crowded with two, three, maybe more families, and when we drove by, a young woman with a baby in her arms smiled and waved at us, and as I recall this, I can't help wonder what her husband will do for her on Valentine's day.

He probably works for a landscaping company, or a builder, making wages lower than the federal or state minimum wage. No insurance, no worker's compensation, no healthcare. But he can't complain, or he will be reported. He is a slave. You can see him on the back of open landscaping trailers riding with 15 or 20 other men before the sun comes up, and coming home after dark, sometimes in the rain or cold when they cover themselves with plastic garbage bags. He is doing the best he can. He has sacrificed everything to live in fear, for the hopes that his children will have a better life someday. He is a martyr.

And he loves his wife as dearly as any other man does, and he feels bad in his heart that he can't do better for her . . . and Valentine's Day is coming. There will be no cruises or new car for her this year, not even a ring, or a box of candy, or even flowers. It will be just like any other day, as he works in the rain, or the cold, or the relentless sun, on well-to-do people's lawns. He feels no animosity toward them, he only respects them and hopes that someday he will be able to have a place of his own. He has a kind heart.

So what will his gift be to his wife, the most important person in the world to him. What can he give her that would be better than a car, a cruise, or a box of candy? Maybe he has given her the cleverest Valentine's gift of all - his entire life.

Valentine's Day, Fairytales and Finding Your Soul Mate

No Comment - Post a comment

Is it really any wonder that we're in so much trouble as a society when it comes to marriage and relationships when you look around at the various media portrayals of what an ideal, healthy relationship might look like. Let's start with a popular ballad about the expectations you might have of your soul mate:

"I don't care who you are, where you're from
Or what you did, as long as you love me."

What a beauty! Talk about co-dependent low self-esteem as the end goal.

Then there's the big line from the movie Jerry McGuire:

"You complete me."

What is that? Are we really walking around as pieces of a soul mate jigsaw puzzle, waiting to find our missing piece in the form of another person or be doomed to a life with our incomplete self? I don't think so.

Now before I go any further, the point here is not to destroy your enjoyment of popular songs (that I can admit to humming along with) or movies (that I actually enjoyed). Rather, I want you to put them into some much needed perspective.

They're fictional, these stories didn't happen, they're not true. And it's a good thing too!

Go back to the song's lyrics for a moment and read them again and imagine what that relationship might look like. And this time don't sing the lyrics, just read them as a statement.

I love this exercise, because when you take the message out of the context it was presented to you, well, it's not quite so romantic is it?............

Unfortunately, as a society we're taking this form of subconscious relationship advice in by the truckload. We don't examine the actual message because we're too swept up in the emotions they trigger. And what's the end result? We have a society where the popular belief is that fairytale can come true.

I'm sorry, but the fact that it is theoretically possible for a street prostitute to end up with a handsome billionaire as in Pretty Woman, is not a good reason to wait around for your own knight in shining armor to come riding into town on a white horse. Likewise, it's very doubtful that a delightful, princess of a woman is going to magically see through your outwardly destructive behavior, to the man for all seasons that lies within.

And then there's the doozie that we've all fallen for in one relationship or another, that "love" will conquer all. The Beatles lied when they told us "All You Need is Love", because they left out all of the other components that you need in order to find, and keep your true soul mate.

You're going to need to be very, very clear on exactly the type of person you want in your life, the kind of values they would have (as well as clearly knowing your own values).

You'll need to have a healthy and developed sense of respect, for yourself first, and then for the person you're inviting into your life.

You'll need to master the art of direct, truthful and sincere communication and be prepared to hold yourself accountable for using it.

You'll also need trust. Trust in you, and trust in your partner with a clear understanding of your mutual agreements and the consequences for breaking them.

And of course you'll need to learn the techniques necessary to apply all of these components with your partner.

We claim to all want rich, loving relationships, yet it's been my experience that people are mostly treating their relationship like it were a game of chance. Think of it like this; finding your true soul mate and creating your ideal relationship is the equivalent of playing a round of golf with someone and each of you shooting par on every hole ... does it make sense to try to do this without taking lessons or instruction from someone who has played to that level before?

Of course not.

You don't get lucky or unlucky in love. You either get the necessary knowledge, and through its application create what might look like "luck" to an outsider, or you continue to enter into relationships hoping that the next one will be "the one" or that the one you're in currently will spontaneously evolve into the relationship of your dreams.

Your soul mate is out there, you just need to decide how important it is that you find them.
